ALL TALK AND NO ACTION CONSERVATIVES CONTINUE TO FAIL ON THE ENVIRONMENT: NDP

OTTAWA – Conservatives are all talk and no action when it comes to the environment, say New Democrats after the government removed their Environment Minister from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Prosperity and Sustainable Growth and struck the words “sustainable growth” from the committee’s title.
“It’s hard to imagine a clearer signal that the Conservatives do not believe economic prosperity needs sustainability,” said NDP Environment critic Megan Leslie (Halifax). “Canadians need real leadership and concrete environmental policies to build the green economy of the future. Simply put: we need a government that can see beyond a four-year mandate. The NDP believes that the environment, the economy and energy can and must work together.”
An NDP government will take concrete steps to restore Canada’s international reputation as an environmental leader, including:
- creating financial incentives for investment in all forms of renewable energy;
- honouring treaty obligations; and,
- reversing reckless changes made to environmental assessments, with a focus on public consultation.
“The Conservatives must recognize that just as unsustainable environmental policies damage the long-term health of our ecosystem, they damage the short- and medium-term health of our economy as well,” said Leslie.
