CANADIANS PAYING FOR CONSERVATIVE CUTS
New PBO report shows Conservatives are downloading their cuts to health care and pensions

OTTAWA – The impact of massive Conservative cuts to health care and pensions will fall squarely on the shoulders Canadians and provincial governments, according to a new report from the Parliamentary Budget Office.
“The fiscal imbalance is back and it’s thanks to Stephen Harper and Jim Flaherty,” said NDP Finance critic Peggy Nash (Parkdale—High Park). “Far from putting our fiscal house in order, this report shows how Conservative cuts to the Canada Health Transfer and Old Age Security are actually just downloaded these costs onto the provinces and individual Canadians.”
The latest PBO report also underscores the need for the Finance Minister Jim Flaherty to act on proposals to increase benefits under the Canadian Pension Plan/Quebec Pension Plan (CPP/QPP).
“This report shows that the Canada Pension Plan is sustainable, and the most cost-effective and reliable way for Canadian families to save for their retirement,” said NDP Pensions critic Murray Rankin (Victoria). “We’re demanding the finance minister explain why he’s broken his word to work with the provinces and move forward on strengthening CPP/QPP.”
Rankin and Nash have sent a letter to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty asking him to explain his inaction on improving CPP/QPP but have not yet received a reply.
