CONSERVATIVE DO-NOTHING BUDGET FAILS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF BRITISH COLUMBIANS

OTTAWA – With their do-nothing budget, Conservatives have failed to stand up for British Columbians, according to NDP National Revenue Critic Murray Rankin (Victoria).

“This budget was an opportunity for the government to invest in jobs, to tackle the housing crisis, and to reverse reckless decisions like gutting the coast guard and closing the oil spill response centre. Instead, they’ve chosen to do nothing,” said Rankin.

Instead of taking action now, Conservatives are once again putting their own interests first and playing politics by waiting until next year to do anything because they think it will help their election prospects.

The Conservatives have ignored the NDP’s practical, low-cost solutions, including reining in credit card rates; capping ATM fees; restoring the ecoEnergy Retrofit – Homes tax credit; and providing job creation tax credits for youth and small businesses. They have also opted to ignore what BC was asking for on the Canada Jobs Grant, saying that the federal government will go it alone if they have to.

“This budget does nothing to make life more affordable here in BC,” said Rankin. “There is nothing new - once again the Conservatives have taken BC for granted. Canadians deserve better.”
