Conservatives block NDP amendment to Bill C-31 to add gender identity to the hate crimes section of the criminal code

Shameful and sad news from the House of Commons Justice Committee.
After the Conservatives indicated they would support Randall Garrison’s amendment to Bill C-13, to add gender identity to the hate crimes section of the criminal code, Conservative MPs made a last minute switch and voted down the measure to protect transgender people from hate crimes.
The measure has already passed in the House of Commons twice as part of NDP Bill C-279, which amends the Canadian Human Rights Act to include gender identity as a prohibited grounds for discrimination.
The bill also amends the Criminal Code to include gender identity as a distinguishing characteristic protected under section 318 and as an aggravating circumstance to be taken into consideration under section 718.2 at the time of sentencing.
Sadly, Bill C-279 has been stalled in the unelected Senate for over a year.
Until we legislate the rights of transgender and gender variant Canadians against discrimination and violence, those people are living without basic human rights.
