GMO - Right to Know

NDP MP Murray Rankin (Victoria) put forward a motion in the House of Commons calling for the mandatory labeling of food products containing ingredients that have been genetically modified.

Since then, endorsements for the motion have poured in.  Industry organizations, consumer advocacy groups, prominent environmentalists and food retailers agree that people have a right to know if they are consuming GMOs.

For a decade now, polls have shown that nearly 90 percent of Canadians support labeling genetically modified foods, but both Conservative and Liberal governments have failed to listen.  Even a Health Canada report on food labeling released on June 10th determined that Canadians want the government to act on GMO labeling.

Consumers have a right to know what they are buying. Labeling genetically modified foods will allow people to make their own choices.

The right to know movement is gaining momentum. In May, the state of Vermont passed legislation to make GMO labeling mandatory.  It’s time for Ottawa to catch up with what nine out of 10 Canadians want and 64 other countries already do.

The full text of motion M-480 is: That in the opinion of the House, the government should introduce mandatory labeling of food products containing ingredients that have been genetically modified.
