Liberal government must overhaul NEB process, respect Indigenous Peoples

Member of Parliament for Victoria Murray Rankin issued the following statement:

“The Liberal government announced today that it is doubling down on using the same flawed Harper-era process to force through the Trans Mountain expansion. The National Energy Board process failed to fulfill its obligation to respect the treaty and constitutional rights of Indigenous Peoples, as determined by the Federal Court of Appeal last month. And now that the government owns the pipeline, how can Indigenous Peoples trust it’s going to be any fairer this time around?

The Trudeau government’s announcement also failed to acknowledge any reliable plan to address the Court’s criticism of the NEB’s neglect to fully consider the impact on British Columbia’s coastline and marine life, especially our beloved Southern Resident Orcas. Furthermore, the Liberals still have no proposal to deal with a devastating diluted bitumen spill.

The Liberals need to fully overhaul the NEB process, as they promised to do in 2015 here in Victoria. The government needs to demonstrate respect for Indigenous Peoples and our environment.”
