OTTAWA - New Democrats congratulated Mike Harcourt in the House of Commons today for receiving the honour of Officer of Order of Canada, one of the highest distinctions in our country.

“Mr. Harcourt has had an exemplary career and made an  extraordinary contribution to Canada – as an engaged citizen, city councillor, Mayor of Vancouver, Leader of the B.C. NDP, and of course as Premier of British Columbia,” said Murray Rankin (MP Victoria) in a statement in the House of Commons. “He has also served an inspiration and powerful advocate for those affected by a disability, following his own remarkable recovery from a serious spinal cord injury.”

Harcourt was bestowed with the honour today at an Order of Canada investiture ceremony at Rideau Hall by the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada.

“I have had the privilege to work closely with  Mike over the years on issues of environmental protection and in first nations treaty negotiations,” continued Rankin.  “Based on this personal experience, I can say without hesitation that Mr. Harcourt is also an incredibly kind person, with a famously positive attitude approach to life.  I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this wonderful tribute. Congratulations, Mike.”
