NDP STANDS WITH BRITISH COLUMBIANS TO STOP THE NORTHERN GATEWAY PIPELINE

OTTAWA – Today, in a statement in the House of Commons, NDP MP Murray Rankin (Victoria) demanded the Conservative government listen to British Columbians and reject the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project.

“Engineers, experts and Enbridge’s own abysmal track record confirm that oil spills are inevitable,” said Rankin. “The environmental and economic risks are simply too high. Over 45,000 fisheries and tourism jobs in British Columbia could be lost, habitat decimated and communities devastated.”

Over 500 people filled a Victoria auditorium last weekend to express their opposition to the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project. The event was part of a larger NDP Take Back our Coast campaign and tour led by NDP MP Nathan Cullen (Skeena—Bulkley Valley) that drew thousands in several coastal communities in BC last week.

“The majority of British Columbians oppose this project because, unlike this Conservative government, they understand that the effects of a pipeline or tanker spill would be disastrous,” continued Rankin. “British Columbians have said no. It is time for Conservatives to listen.”

The NDP Take Back our Coast campaign will continue to unite opposition to the Enbridge pipeline project over the coming months. http://takebackourcoast.ca/
