OTTAWA – Today, New Democrat MPs elected Murray Rankin (Victoria) to the position of federal British Columbia Caucus Chair.

“I am so honoured to have the confidence of this talented group of BC New Democrat MPs.  As caucus chair I hope to play an important role leading into the 2015 election,” said Rankin. “As the Official Opposition to the Harper Government, we are the only party standing up for what matters to British Columbians -- and the best positioned party to defeat and replace Stephen Harper in 2015.”

Rankin was elected Member of Parliament for Victoria in a by-election on November 26th, 2012. He serves as Official Opposition Critic for Pensions and National Revenue.  He has been a forceful advocate for the expansion of public pensions and retirement security, as well as an outspoken critic of Conservative inaction on tax evasion and the use of tax havens.

Rankin is an internationally recognized expert in environmental and public law. He was also a professor of law at the University of Victoria and is widely considered one of Canada's top lawyers in his fields.
