NDP CALLS ON ALL MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE TO SUPPORT SHARK FIN IMPORT BAN
OTTAWA – NDP MP Murray Rankin (Victoria) called for all-party support of Bill C-380, critical legislation that will stop the import of shark fins into Canada, introduced by NDP Deputy Fisheries and Oceans Critic Fin Donnelly (New Westminster-Coquitlam and Port Moody) .
“People from across Canada have been working incredibly hard in support of this bill, like Fin Free Victoria, who are real a force for change,” said Rankin in a statement in the House of Commons. “Let’s listen to their voices. I am urging every member of the House to do the right thing, vote for this Bill, and stop the import of shark fins.”
An estimated 73 million sharks are killed annually for their fins, often by a brutal practice called shark finning, where the fins are removed and the body is dumped back into the ocean. Shark finning is causing a rapid decline in shark populations and damage to marine ecosystems.
“Young people are passionate about saving sharks, and they want their government to take action,” said Donnelly. “Canada can become a world leader by banning the importation of shark fins and ending our role in this destructive trade.”
Bill C-380 is expected to be voted on at second reading on March 27th.
