OTTAWA – Today New Democrats slammed the Conservatives for publicly denying the existence of an iPod Tax imposed on imported electronic goods, while privately scheming to impose these taxes retroactively.
OTTAWA – Alarmed at impending cuts to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), New Democrats are today calling on the Auditor General to open an investigation into the agency’s ability to crack down on tax cheats.
In a letter to the Auditor General, Official Opposition critic for National Revenue, Murray Rankin (Victoria) and MP for Marc-Aurèle-Fortin, Alain Giguère, point out their concerns that recent cutbacks at CRA will harm its ability to combat tax evasion and illegal use of tax havens.

NDP SLAMS HARPER'S TAX ON CONSUMER GOODS
Conservatives raise $8 billion on taxes on over 1,200 products including bicycles
OTTAWA – Today New Democrats slammed the Conservatives for the $8 billion tax raise on Canadian consumer goods, including bicycles.
“Stephen Harper promised Canadians that he would not impose new taxes on them,” said NDP National Revenue Critic Murray Rankin (Victoria). “But he is raising taxes on bicycles and over 1,200 types of consumer goods.”
Despite their promise to Canadians not to raise taxes in the 2013 budget, the Conservatives are pushing ahead with deceptive tax hikes, which will represent a several billion dollar bill for Canadian taxpayers.
