Statement from NDP Justice Critic Murray Rankin on the Liberal party resolution to make C14 Charter compliant

“I would like to applaud the grassroots of the Liberal party who are proposing an emergency resolution at the party’s convention calling on the government to bring bill C14 in line with the Supreme Court’s decision and therefore compliant with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. I also urge the party leadership to allow this resolution to be put to a vote. The issue of physician assisted dying is not a partisan issue, which is partly why both the Liberals and the NDP have allowed for a free vote on the issue. However, before the House of Commons holds a final vote on the issue, the Liberal government should put forward the best legislation possible and show that they are listening to constitutional experts, human rights advocates, opposition MPs and indeed many members of the Liberal party itself.”
