VICTORIA – Recently, without adequate public consultation, it was announced that Canada Post and the Conservatives will be making drastic cuts to long-treasured postal services – killing good jobs, eliminating home delivery, cutting rural post office hours and increasing postage rates.

“Hundreds of people have contacted my office to express their serious concerns about these short-sighted service cuts,” said NDP MP Murray Rankin (Victoria). “Unfortunately, Canada Post’s consultations were only conducted by Internet, effectively eliminating any opportunity for input from the people who will be most affected.  That is why I decided to hold this public meeting.”

Five million households would lose home delivery and 6,000 to 8,000 workers would lose their jobs over the next five years if the announced cuts are implemented. Seniors with mobility issues, disabled individuals and municipalities are likely to be most affected by the elimination of home delivery services.  People on fixed incomes, charity organizations and small businesses will also be hit particularly hard by the dramatic price increase in postage.

“Having reliable and accessible mail delivery is vital to Canadians. I believe it is possible to find new ways to create revenue to maintain existing services,” said Rankin. “Unfortunately, instead of looking for viable solutions to improve services through innovation and modernizing operations, Canada Post and the Conservatives are taking an axe to our treasured postal service.”

The discussion will be moderated by Victoria-Swan Lake MLA Rob Fleming. Guest speakers include: Marianne Alto, Victoria City Councillor & CRD Director, Janet Barney, President, Canadian Union of Postal Workers (Local 850), Phil Crowson, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and Mike Hanson, Executive Director, Victoria Disability Resource Centre. The event is free and open to the public.
