Making Affordable Housing a Reality in Victoria

Housing is an issue for far too many people in Victoria. Many are facing homelessness, struggling to afford rent or consider it impossible to purchase a house.

MP Rankin has been working hard to get the federal government to invest in housing in Victoria. In 2016, MP Rankin pressed the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities asking the federal government for $30 million for housing in Victoria, to match commitments made by the provincial government and the Capital Regional District. Copies of the letters to the Ministers are attached at the bottom of this webpage. In 2018, the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development finally announced that Ottawa would match the $30 investments.

MP Rankin continues to call on the government to officially declare housing a human right for Canadians. In 2017, Rankin spoke in favour bill C-325 to add the right to housing to the Canadian Bill of Rights. The Liberals rejected the bill.
