Townhall Meeting on Farmland Protection

"Hands off the ALR"

Wednesday November 27th, 7:00pm
Mary Winspear Centre
2243 Beacon Avenue, Sidney

I just wanted to remind everyone about an important townhall meeting this Wednesday on protecting the agricultural land reserve. Earlier this month, many of us heard the news that the Agricultural Land Commission may be dismantled and new powers given to the Oil and Gas Commission. The Agricultural Land Reserve was created nearly four decades ago by a New Democrat government in British Columbia to preserve prime agricultural areas for farming and food production. Since then, it has protected more than four million hectares of farmland from urban sprawl and re-development. I often talk to people in Victoria about how enormously important the future of the Agricultural Land Commission and Reserve is to them, and indeed all British Columbians. Protecting agricultural land is vital to promoting good, locally-grown food and to ensuring the sustainability and security of our food system across the province.

You can read more about the proposals to break up the commission in a Globe and Mail article here:

There’s also an online petition you can sign to express your support for the Agricultural Land Commission and Reserve:

This week’s townhall is free and open to all. I encourage anyone who is interested to attend to share your views and learn more about this issue. It will be held on Wednesday evening at 7:00pm at the Mary Winspear Centre at 2243 Beacon Avenue in Sidney. Join local farmers, producers, and special guests, including Harold Steves, a Richmond farmer and city councillor who was instrumental to the creation of the Reserve, and Lana Popham, the MLA for Saanich South.
